Ujjain (Avantika): Ujjain or
Ujjayini is an ancient pilgrimage which was known as
Avantika or
Avanti in ancient times. Ujjain is a
Moksha Puri, has a
Jyotirlinga, has two
Shakti Peethas, and is a place of
Kumbha Mela. Ujjain is located on the bank of river
Shipra.

Moksha Puri: Ujjain is one of the seven Moksha Puris (Mathura, Ayodhya, Mayapuri, Kashi, Kanchi, Avantika and Dwarka).

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga: Mahakaleshwar temple of
Ujjain is a
Jyotirlinga identified with the
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga mentioned in
Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita 16.
