Jyotirlinga identified with the
Mahakaleshwara Jyotirlinga mentioned in
Shiva Purana - Koti Rudra Samhita 16.

Worship of Lord Shiva by Veda Priya: Avanti is the place where Veda Priya and other brahmanas worshipped Lord Shiva praying for protection from demon Dushana. Lord Shiva appeared there in the terrible form of Mahakala and reduced Dushana and part of his army to ashes by a humakara. Then on the request of the brahmanas Lord Shiva abided there as the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga.
