Finger Joint jig 2 |
|
Back to main CNC page | |
I made a finger joint jig that bolts down to my CNC top. There is a slot through the CNC top wide enough for .25" thick x 3" wide material
to pass right through the top. I also cut a slot into the workbench top under the CNC machine so that the material can pass right through the workbench top. I can cut finger joints
in long pieces of wood this way. I still have to run all the pieces through my router table to cut a groove for the box bottom to sit into. The CNC machine could do it, but it's
way faster on the router table to cut an 1/8th inch groove. The box bottom is just 1/8" thick masonite. The finger joints are glued with common wood glue. I round over the box
edges with a 1/8th" roundover bit on the router table. Then I sanded the boxes a bit and applied a hand rubbed finish just to give them a nicer looking finish than raw wood.
You could stain them, polyurethane them or spend however much time finishing them as you like. Note that you need two different cut patterns on the CNC. The front and rear of the boxes use one finger cut pattern and the sides use another one. See how the fingers are staggered on the two different patterns? The fingers below are 1/4" wide. |

Here's the jig for the small finger joint boxes I make. | First I slide over and lock down that green piece of fiberglass on top. |

Then I push the piece of wood up through the slot and bump it flush against the green fiberglass piece |
Next I clamp the wood to the jig nice and tight and pull back the fiberglass piece Sorry about the fuzzy picture. |

Then I fire up the CNC and let it cut the fingers | Here you can see how the wood comes up through the workbench top and passes right through the CNC top. |
