Making motor shaft couplers

image
Home made motor shaft couplers
I was looking at the silly prices they get for one motor shaft coupler, the nice ones were $15 each and up.

I saw these cool split clamps at Mcmaster-Carr but they were only 5/16" wide and only had one set screw.
I bought a few aluminum ones to try and see if I could join two of them to make a motor coupler.
They also come in a couple types of steel if you can work with hardened steel.

I clamped two couplers to a .25" shaft and then drilled 2 x 3/32" holes into the couplers.
I had some hardened 3/32 steel pins that I got somewhere years ago and so I epoxied them into the holes I drilled.
Update 1: I'm happy to report back that these couplers are working great, so far. :) I have my motors and screws lined up perfectly and there doesn't seem to be any wobble at high speeds. we will see how they hold up in the long run. So far, so good.
Update 2: 01/16/2008. The new machine build is under way. I was thinking I needed to upgrade the motor couplers that I made, but they are still working perfectly, so they are going onto the new machine.
