EL34's CNC Stuff - About holding tabs |

Some people ask me why some of the parts I cut have little pieces of material around the edges. These bits are what is left of the holding tab when the part was cut from a larger piece of material. |

In order to cut out a shape from a large sheet of material, you must leave just a tiny bit of material to hold the piece in place. If you did not have a holding tab, the piece you are cutting would just fly off the CNC table and not be cut correctly. If you look at the images on this page, you can see that there are four tabs on each of the black rings. The material thickness is .062. The holding tabs height is .02" x .125" wide. After the whole sheet has been cut, I remove the sheet and clip each ring off with some nippers. This still leaves a tiny bit that sticks out on each ring. I don't sand these parts smooth and remove the remaining holding tabs because it would add a huge amount of labor to the cost of these parts. Before you use these parts, just clean them up a bit with some 150 or 200 grit sandpaper. On copper circuit board parts, make sure you look closely for any bits of copper that may be stuck to the boards. |

Here's a shot of the sheet removed from the CNC machine sitting against a white background, which makes it a bit easier to see the holding tabs. |

The rings have all been cut from the sheet with a pair of nippers. You can see the remaining bits of the holding tabs |
