Slideshow Tutorial
Step 3: Presentation Options
When you are happy with the timings, transitions, and other settings for your slideshow, you're ready to prepare for a presentation. You will remember from "The Big Picture" section several steps ago, you basically have 3 options for output of your slideshow. You can make a Quicktime file out of your slideshow, you can burn a DVD of your slideshow (using iDVD), or you can just present the slideshow using iPhoto (using the "Play" button, described in the previous step). Here is a rundown of the advantages vs. disadvantages for each output method:
Presenting Your Slideshow with iPhoto
Advantages
|
Disadvantages
|
•No "extra" work like burning discs or exporting files
•What You See Is What You Get
•Potentially higher resolution than quicktime or DVD
•Plays full screen
|
•You are (essentially) committed to using whatever computer you used to create the slideshow. If you are going to present your slideshow from within iPhoto, it's best to create the the slideshow on a laptop.
|
Presenting Your Slideshow as a Quicktime movie
Advantages
|
Disadvantages
|
•No dependencies; audio & images are embedded into one video playback file
•Works on Mac and Windows (must have Quicktime installed)
•Make your slideshow on one computer, play it on another
|
•Only plays full screen if you have Quicktime Pro installed on playback computer
|
Presenting Your Slideshow on a DVD
Advantages
|
Disadvantages
|
•Generally offers the most portability/flexibility; plays on DVD players and many different computers
•No dependencies; audio & images are embedded into one video playback format
•Plays full screen
|
•DVD burning and playback can be very confusing. Some DVD burners (computers) will only burn certain formats (or certain brand/format combinations). The same is true for DVD players. Generally, DVD-R media rated at 1x-8x speed works best. Students have noticed problems with media rated at 1x-16x.
•Requires the most "extra" work, because you will need to send your slideshow from iPhoto to iDVD, and then setup and burn your iDVD project onto a disc.
