Glory of Rudraksha
(Shiva Purana - Vidyeshwara Samhita - 25)
शिव उवाच
श्रूयतां तु महेशानि!
रुद्राक्षमहिमा शिवे!
।
कथयामि तव प्रीत्या भक्तानां हितकाम्यया ॥४॥
Shiva Uvaaca
Shruuyataam Tu Maheshaani! Rudraakssa-Mahimaa Shive!|
Kathayaami Tava Priityaa Bhaktaanaam Hita-Kaamyayaa ||4||
Shiva said:
1: Listen, O Maheshani; (Listen) to the glory of Rudraksha, O Shivaa,
2: I narrate this for your joy and for the welfare of the devotees.
दिव्यवर्षसहस्राणि महेशानि!
पुनः पुरा ।
तपः प्रकुर्वतस्त्रस्तं मनः संयम्य वै मम ॥५॥
Divya-Varssa-Sahasraanni Maheshaani! Punah Puraa |
Tapah Prakurvatas-Trastam Manah Samyamya Vai Mama ||5||
1: O Maheshani, once again in earlier times for one thousand divine years ...
2: ... I performed penance; an agitation developed in my mind which was to be checked.
स्वतन्त्रेण परेशेन लोकोपकृतिकारिणा ।
लीलया परमेशानि!
चक्षुरुन्मीलितं मया ॥६॥
Svatantrenna Pareshena Loko[a-U]pakrti-Kaarinnaa |
Liilayaa Parameshaani! Cakssur-Unmiilitam Mayaa ||6||
1: By the will of the sovereign Lord to act for the welfare of the world,
2: By the Leela (divine play), O Parameshani, my eyes got opened.
पुटाभ्यां चारुचक्षुर्भ्यां पतिता जलबिन्दवः ।
तत्राश्रुबिन्दुतो जाता वृक्षा रुद्राक्षसंज्ञकाः ॥७॥
Puttaabhyaam Caaru-Cakssurbhyaam Patitaa Jala-Bindavah |
Tatra-Ashru-Binduto Jaataa Vrkssaa Rudraakssa-Samjnyakaah ||7||
1: From the corner of the (half-opened) beautiful eyes, drops of tears fell,
2: From those tear-drops originated the trees which are known as Rudraksha.
