Name: Joshua Hajicek, Ph.D.

Field: Sitar
Location: Ann Arbor, MI
Telephone: 917-597-9820
Misc. Info: Sitar Lessons, Performance, and Instrument Repair. I teach the styles of Khayal, Gayaki, and Dhrupad as well as how to properly maintain your instrument. Students will learn the system of raga and all its elements; alap, jor, jhalla, compositions (bandish), taans, and how to play in taal. Through regular practice and training, you will learn how to connect with your innerself which is the foundation for mastering the art of musical expression. For a given raga, the system of Indian classical music first necessitates "finding" and tuning the instrument, or singing, with the correct set of Shrutis (microtones). Shrutis are not difficult to learn. Finding and using them is actually straightforward and easy. Once the Shrutis are established, the raga automatically begins to express itself and makes learning and practicing enjoyable, intuitive, sustainable, and tends to impact ones life in many positive ways.
