Summary and recommendations

Several graphics libraries are available covering a range of needs from the beginner to the programmer developing a large interactive teaching package. We recommend that the libraries should be used as follows:

vogle

: the first option to consider for C/C++/fortran programmers needing graphics. Source code is available for many machine types.

X/Motif/Athena

: for experienced C/C++ programmers needing low-level features.

Tcl/Tk

: Front ends.

gtk and Qt

: Front ends.

Matlab

: Front ends and sophisticated visualisation.
