Christ at Emmaus, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1654

Christ at Emmaus, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1654

etching and drypoint, printed with light surface tone, h 211mm × w 160mm More details

In the second state of this brilliantly lit scene Rembrandt reinforced the contrasts. He added lines in drypoint, for instance in the cloth behind Christ and the hat of the disciple at the right. This makes it clearer that the light shines in from the right. Compare, for example, the disciple at the left who is fully lit with the shaded front of the man at the right. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
