The Descent from the Cross by Torchlight, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1654
etching and drypoint, printed with light surface tone on Japanese paper, h 205mm × w 162mm More details
This impression clearly demonstrates the extent to which the type of paper used can influence the appearance of a print. Rembrandt suggested the warm glow of the torchlight in the night by printing this impression on orange-yellow Japanese paper. To this he added a light surface tone: a haze of ink covering the entire surface. The stretcher in the foreground, with the draped shroud, serves as a second light source. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
