Saint Francis beneath a Tree, Praying, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1657
etching, h 181mm × w 246mm More details
Rembrandt completed the scene in the second state of this print by introducing an Italian landscape in the background, which is entirely fitting for a saint from Assisi. He did not make the additions in drypoint, but rather etched them in the copper plate. This sequence – etching after drypoint – was quite experimental, and it was the first and also the last time he did this.
