Panorama near Bloemendaal with the Saxenburg Estate, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1651

etching, h 121mm × w 319mm More details

From 1638 the Saxenburg estate belonged to Christoffel Thijsz, the man from whom Rembrandt bought his house on the Jodenbreestraat. Rembrandt possibly made this print as a gift for his creditor. The panorama of Haarlem and Bloemendaal in the distance cannot be observed in a single glance. Rembrandt may have used numerous sketches to recreate the distant vista in its entirety.
