Cottage and Boundary Post on the Spaarndammerdijk, Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1650
etching, h 83mm × w 160mm More details
Six of these kinds of boundary markers were located outside of Amsterdam to demarcate the town limits. This one was on the Spaarndammerdijk between Amsterdam and Haarlem. Rembrandt initially etched the boundary post in its entirety, but later lengthened it to extend beyond the scene. If you look closely, you can still see the first attempt.
