Moss created this painting in Cornwall, England, having fled there because of World War II. Unlike many other paintings, Moss completely abandoned the use of colour in this one. The artist wrote that the absence of natural forms might generate a sense of alienation. Viewers were encouraged to see the lines as musical notes in a visual sound composition.
