Goeneutte painted this work in the company of fellow artist, Jean Béraud. It was exhibited at the Salon of 1876.
Goeneutte made a series of studies for the painting, and he also produced an etching based on the left side, with several figures added. The off-centre composition and silhouetted figures show the influence of Japanese prints, which were very popular at the time, especially among artists.
