Study of an Old Man
Ilya Repin
In 1876 after three years in Paris, Repin returned to his birthplace of Chuguyev in the Ukraine, where he painted a number of peasant portraits and everyday subjects. A famous example of the former is his 'Peasant with the Evil Eye' of 1877 (Moscow, Tretyakov Gallery). This study probably formed part of the same series.
