In this sketch Leighton looks down onto the roofs of a small group of simple peasant houses. With their light colour, distinctive shallow domes and chimneys, they stand in stark contrast to the landscape they inhabit. A trail winds its way across a steep crest of hills. The distant summit is almost exactly at the vertical midpoint of the painting. At left, the steep cliffs fall away to the sea.
