A Road in the Roman Campagna
Eugène-Ferdinand Buttura
This oil sketch of a dusty road meandering through the Roman Campagna was probably painted while Buttura was staying at the Villa Medici in Rome. Scrubby trees line the roadway, while a single curving line of paint describes the small, dry gulley that runs along its edge. Buttura captures the arid atmosphere of a Roman summer's afternoon.
