Although dated 1885, this work was almost certainly painted in 1894, when Monet painted a series of works at Port-Villez.
To paint the series Monet probably worked from a boat. Port-Villez, between Vernon and Bonnières-sur-Seine, is noted for its cliffs bordering the river. Here they are depicted under the effects of a morning mist, shorn of details, and reflected with perfect symmetry. The silver tones show the influence of Corot.
