Indra (Rig Veda 1.5) - Madhuchanda Vaisvamitra
Indra (Rig Veda 1.5) - Madhuchanda Vaisvamitra:
Indra (Rig Veda - Mandala 1 - Sukta 5 - Mantra 6):
Tvam Sutasya Piitaye Sadyo Vrddho Ajaayathaah |
Indra Jyaisstthyaaya Sukrato ||1.5.6||
(Tvam Sutasya Piitaye Sadyo Vrddho Ajaayathaah): (O Indra) For drinking the prepared Soma you have now assumed an augmented form revered by all.
(Indra Jyaisstthyaaya Sukrato): O Indra, you are elevated to the highest position, O the performer of good deeds.
Comments:
- In this mantra, the process by which the grace of Indra dawns is mentioned. Indra assumes an augmented form for drinking the Soma juice.
- The first half of the Yagna Cycle relates to self-effort, which is individual in nature. The second half of the Yagna Cycle relates to grace which is collective in nature. This is also a very important concept. Even though an individual performs a Yagna, the grace that dawns is for collective good. It is like planting a tree in a garden. Even though the tree is planted within the garden of an individual, the benefits extended by the tree is for collective good.
- Since Indra is going to shower grace for collective good, Indra assumes an augmented form for drinking the Soma juice. That augmented form is revered by all.
Indra (Rig Veda - Mandala 1 - Sukta 5 - Mantra 7):
Aa Tvaa Vishantvaashavah Somaasa Indra Girvannah |
Sham Te Santu Pracetase ||1.5.7||
(Aa Vishantu Somaasa): (O Indra) Let the Soma enter you.
(Sham Te Santu Pracetase): (O Indra) Let the Soma awaken you.
Comments:
- In this mantra, invocation of Indra is further detailed. It is being prayed that the Soma juice may enter Indra and awaken him.
- It was earlier mentioned that Yagna is our participation in upholding Rita along with the Devas. For this, Agni is first lighted and Soma juice is offered to the Devas. Then we start invoking the Devas. Our self-effort begins and continues repeatedly. This self-effort is not a mere ritual. Chanting of the Vedic mantras in the presence of Agni continuously purifies us. And we repeatedly invoke the divine power by offering Soma juice. An inner Yagna goes on. When the limitations of our individual self starts to "melt", the divine power gets awakened. The Soma juice is our devotion. By offering our devotion repeatedly, we awaken the divine power. Hence it is being prayed that the Soma juice may enter Indra and awaken him.
Indra (Rig Veda - Mandala 1 - Sukta 5 - Mantra 8):
Tvaam Stomaa Aviivrdhan Tvaam-Ukthaa Shatakrato |
Tvaam Vardhantu No Girah ||1.5.8||
(Tvaam Stomaa Aviivrdhan): (O Indra) The Chants (of the Vedas) have made you grow.
(Tvaam-Ukthaa Aviivrdhan): (O Indra) The Riks (of the Chants) have made you grow
(Tvaam Vardhantu No Girah): (O Indra) May our praises magnify you.
Comments:
- This mantra is of the same tone as the previous one. It is being prayed that the chants of the Vedas accompanying the offering of the Soma juice may awaken Indra.
- In the Yagna, three things are going on repeatedly. Continuous purification by Agni, the chants of the Vedic mantras and the offering of the Soma juice.
- The purification by Agni accompanied by the chants of the Vedic mantras tend to melt our individual limitations. The Vedic mantras as if open up a channel to the divine powers. And through that channel we offer the Soma juice of devotion. This awakens the divine power and the next stage of our transformation begins.
