Indra (Rig Veda 1.10) - Madhuchanda Vaisvamitra
Indra (Rig Veda 1.10) - Madhuchanda Vaisvamitra:
Indra (Rig Veda - Mandala 1 - Sukta 10 - Mantra 4):
Ehi Stomaa Abhi Svaraabhi Grnniihyaa Ruva |
Brahma Ca No Vaso Sa-Ce[a-I]ndra Yajnyam Ca Vardhaya ||1.10.4||
(Brahma Ca No Vaso Sa-Ce[a-I]ndra): Come to our (Yagna) with Indra, O Brahma (Divine Knowledge) and Vasu (Wealth).
(Yajnyam Ca Vardhaya): And make the Yagna grow.
Comments:
- In this mantra, Brahma (Knowledge) and Vasu (Wealth) are invoked in the Yagna with Indra.
- Indra is the Deva presiding over the dynamic aspect of the Cosmic Order. The main role of Indra is to slay the Vrtras who are the Asuras covering the Cosmic Order. These coverings limit human beings to narrow individual lives cut off from the Cosmic life. Once the coverings are removed, the Cosmic life manifests with its inherent Knowledge (Brahma) and Wealth (Vasu).
- Cosmic Order is established in a plane which is connected to both our internal world of Mind, and external world of Nature. Brahma is the internal Knowledge, and Vasu is the external Wealth.
- That both Knowledge and Wealth are connected is an unique feature of the Vedas. Getting wealth without knowledge does not give us enduring joy. Getting knowledge without wealth also does not give us enduring joy due to lack of creative expression.
- In Rita or Cosmic Order, both Knowledge and Wealth are connected. Knowledge is the awakening of the soul to the Cosmic Order. Wealth is the vast expression of Nature.
- These aspects of Knowledge and Wealth of Rita becomes practical in our lives through Yagna. Through Yagna, we awaken the knowledge of the Cosmic Order within us. This is the dimension of Education. Through Yagna we express the Cosmic Order in our surroundings. This is the dimension of Environment. Through Yagna we sustain each other within that Environment. This is the dimension of Economy. Obviously this Yagna is not a mere ritual. It is expressing the Cosmic Order in our lives and designing societies according to it. Thus the mantra invokes Brahma and Vasu to grow the Yagna.
Indra (Rig Veda - Mandala 1 - Sukta 10 - Mantra 5):
Uktham-Indraaya Shamsyam Vardhanam Puru-Nissssidhe |
Shakro Yathaa Sutessu Nno Raarannat Sakhyessu Ca ||1.10.5||
(Uktham-Indraaya Shamsyam Vardhanam): The Hymns make Indra grow.
(Puru-Nissssidhe): While driving away (the foes representing narrowness).
(Sutessu Nno Raarannat Sakhyessu Ca): (The growth) brings joy to our sons and friends (i.e. to others).
Comments:
- In this mantra, it is said that the hymns make Indra grow which brings joy to us.
- Indra represents the dynamic aspect of the Cosmic Order. The previous mantra highlighted the association of Knowledge and Wealth with the Cosmic Order. This mantra highlights the association of Joy with the Cosmic Order.
- The growth of Indra represents our inner growth towards Cosmic Order shedding away our individuality. This is a long process. There are many foes to overcome like fear, insecurity etc. But once the growth happens, it brings joy; because we are approaching our true nature of the Aatman. There may be fear and insecurity also (till the stage of maturity), but also the underlying joy of the Aatman.
- Here son and friends represent all relations in the world. When a single individual becomes open to Cosmic Order after whatsoever struggle, he is bound to bring joy to others through his activities.
Indra (Rig Veda - Mandala 1 - Sukta 10 - Mantra 10):
Vidmaa Hi Tvaa Vrssantam Vaajessu Havana-Shrutam |
Vrssantam-Asya Huumaha Uutim Sahasra-Saatamaam ||1.10.10||
(Tvaa Vrssantam Vaajessu Havanashrutam): (O Indra) You shower by listening to the invocations during the sacrificial offerings of the Havana.
(Vrssantam-Asya Huumaha): We invoke the showerer.
(Uutim Sahasra-Saatamaam): Who promotes thousand deeds of welfare.
Comments:
- In this mantra, Indra is invoked to shower his grace by listening to the invocations during the Yagna. That shower of grace will promote thousand deeds of welfare.
- This mantra highlights the Vedic principle of life, and why it stands on a firm foundation which is durable and brings lasting welfare. Here, the foundation is built by asking grace directly from the Cosmic Order. We invoke the Cosmic Order who awakens us. That awakening promotes thousand deeds of welfare.
- Without the awakening of human beings, no lasting welfare can come. And without the awakening by Cosmic Order, narrowness cannot be overcome. It is like invoking and channelizing the Cosmic Order to build the society through us. And this is Yagna.
Indra (Rig Veda - Mandala 1 - Sukta 10 - Mantra 12):
Pari Tvaa Girvanno Gira Imaa Bhavantu Vishvatah |
Vrddha-(A)ayum-Anu Vrddhayo Jussttaa Bhavantu Jussttayah ||1.10.12||
(Gira Imaa Bhavantu Vishvatah): May these Hymns pervade universally.
(Vrddha Aayum Anu Vrddhayah): May your life of Wisdom become our lives of wisdom.
(Jussttaa Bhavantu Jussttayah): May your Joy become our joys.
Comments:
- In this mantra, the wish to imbibe the Cosmic life of Indra in our lives are highlighted.
- It is like invoking and channelizing the Cosmic Order to build our lives and society. Therefore it is said: May these Hymns pervade universally; May your life of Wisdom become our lives of wisdom; May your Joy become our joys.
- A life rooted in Rita or Cosmic Order is a life of knowledge, wealth (of Nature) and joy. The ancient hermitages of the Rishis were embodiment of such life. However, the same principle can be carried forward to build societies where Education, Environment and Economy are designed based on Yagna.
