Thiru Ooragam Divya Desam - Trivikrama Perumal
Thiru Ooragam Divya Desam - Trivikrama Perumal

•
Meditation: I meditate on
Sri Trivikraman (
Ulagalanda Perumal) at
Thiru Ooragam who appeared in the form of
Vamana Avatara in the yagna of king
Mahabali and assuming the form of Trivikrama gave boon to the king.
•
Thiru Ooragam Divya Kshetra: Thiru Ooragam is a
Divya Desam whose glory was sung by Thirumangai Alvar and Thirumazhisai Alvar. Thiru Ooragam is situated near the Kamakshi temple of Kanchipuram. The Lord here is known as
Trivikraman or
Ulagalanda Perumal, the huge form the Lord assumed during his
Vamana Avatara when he came to the yagna of king
Mahabali and gave him boon. Since king Mahabali was not able to see his huge form, the Lord assumed the diminutive form of
Adisesha. Hence the Divya Desam is known as
Thiru Ooragam, Ooragam meaning snake. The two shrines,
Peragam (huge form of Ulagalanda Perumal) and
Ooragam (diminutive form of Adisesha) are considered together as part of the same Divya Desam.
Note: There are four Divya Desams within the Ulagalanda Perumal temple of Kanchipuram. They are Thiru Ooragam, Thiruneeragam, Thirukaragam and Thirukarvanam.

Lord assuming the form of Trivikrama: During the
Vamana Avatara of Lord Vishnu, the Lord came to the yagna of king
Mahabali in the form of a Brahmin dwarf. Asking for a boon of three steps of land from the king, the Lord with two steps covered the
Heaven and the
Earth. On the request of king Bali, the Lord placed the third step on the
head of the king. Subsequently, the Lord gave a boon to king Mahabali, sent him to Patalaloka and restored the heaven to Indra. Since king Mahabali was not able to see his huge form, the Lord assumed the diminutive form of
Adisesha. Hence the Divya Desam is known as
Thiru Ooragam, Ooragam meaning snake. The two shrines,
Peragam (huge form of Ulagalanda Perumal) and
Ooragam (diminutive form of Adisesha) are considered together as part of the same Divya Desam.

Image: The image of the Trivikrama form of the Lord is in standing posture facing west and is almost 35 feet in height. The Lord is pointing two fingers of his right hand upwards and one finger of his left hand downwards. His right foot is lifted and his left foot is placed on the head of king Mahabali. With the two upwards finger as well as his lifted right foot, the Lord is perhaps suggesting the two steps taken over the Heaven and the Earth. With the downward finger he is pointing to the surrender of king Mahabali whose head is placed under his left foot.
• Thiru Ooragam is located in Kanchipuram in the
Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu.
