Worship of Lord Shiva by sage Gautama: Brahmagiri mountain is the place where sage Gautama performed penance worshipping Lord Shiva as an act of repentance for (a false accusation of) killing a cow. Lord Shiva appeared before sage Gautama and relieved him from the false accusation; and also released a part of river Ganga from his matted hairs. This river came to be known as
Gautami Ganga or
Godavari. On the request of sage Gautama and the devas Lord Shiva abided there as Tryambakeshwar Jyotirlinga.
