udaku – See “idakka”.
udakai – See “idakka”.
udatta – In the old three-note singing of Vedic chants, this is the middle note. The lower note being the lower pitch while the swarit is the high note.
uday tal – An obscure tal of 12 beats.
udirn tal – An obscure tal of 16 beats.
ukshav tal – A rare tal of 10 beats.
ulta kan – On instruments it is a backwards way to affect a kan swar (grace note).
urdu – One of the two major groups of dialects of Hindustani, the other being Hindi
urumili – A folk drum
ushakiran tal – A rare tal of 16 beats.
ustad – A learned man, a master.
uthan – A cadential form used commonly in dance and tabla solos. This is a type of mukhada used as an introductory piece.

uttari gunkali – A rare morning rag.
