octave – See “saptak”.
orissi – 1) A style of classical dance from the Eastern state of Orissa. 2) The classical style of music from Orissa.
oriya – An Indo-European language common to the Indian state of Orissa.
ottu – An instrument similar to a nadaswaram, but merely used to provide the drone.
omkarnath thakur – (1897-1967) Famous vocalist who was a student of V.D. Paluskar.
one – According to the South Indian nomenclature of pitch, this represents C. It is so called because it represents the first key of the octave of the harmonium.
one-and-half – According to the South Indian nomenclature of pitch, this represents C# (Bb). It is so called because it represents a half-step higher than the first key of the octave of the harmonium.
overtone – In a harmonic spectrum, overtones are the harmonics of the fundamental.
