Ektal is a common tala heard in classical and semi-classical music. The origin of the name is unknown as ektal (meaning “one-clap”) actually has four claps in the form of talis. Nonetheless, ektal is the only tala, besides tintal, which is commonly known in its slow, medium, and fast tempo. This is the Hindustani version of the tala. There is a Bengali version which is found commonly in Bengali bhajans. This is a twelve matra cycle, although in fast tempos, it is practically counted as six-beats divided 2+2+1+1.
