Dhamara
tala is an ancient tala
which was originally played on the pakhawaj.
Consisting of fourteen beats per cycle, the structure of dhamara
is quite unusual, due to the fact that the four vibhags
are unevenly divided in this format of 5+2+3+4. The tali of this tala
starts off with a closed bol, and the khali contains an open bol.
Dhamara
tala is used primarily in old styles of music such as
dhrupada and another style of music called dhamara. Dhamara music is a
similar to dhrupada, except dhamara
is more devoted to the Holi pastimes of Lord Krsna.
