Lesson 20: Example 5

The teaching point of this example is how to transition between single time to double time (madhya laya to drut laya).

Play TWO cycles of Prabhupada tala with the second cycle containing Mukhra 2 “the pickup”, play drut kaherva prakar 1 for four times

This is where it gets difficult. Again, let’s break it down step by step

STEP 1 & 2: Two cycles of Prabhupada tala with Mukhra 2 inserted in the 2nd cycle

In notation form, this is difficult to follow. Since you are playing in double time in kaherva tala, you count the eight beats twice compared to the speed with Prabhupada tala. Prabhupada tala has sixteen beats. Drut kaherva has eight beats. Since drut kaherva is being played in double time, one cycle of drut kaherva would fit four beats of Prabhupada tala.

If you are still having difficulty understand the notation, please watch the video and practice! The only feasible way to understand this is by watching, hearing, and practicing.
