Lesson 20: Example 2

Play four cycles of kahervā tāla thekā, with the last cycle incorporating Mukhra 1.

Let’s break this down, step by step:

STEP 1: Four cycles of kahervā tāla thekā:

STEP 2: We want to add Mukhra 1 to the ending of Cycle 4. Recall from Lesson 18 what Mukhra 1 is. I color coded this for a reason.

STEP 3: Replace the last eight bols with those of the mukhra. This is as straightforward as it suggests. The mukhra is 8 mātrās long. The last cycle is also eight mātrās long. Therefore, the last cycle of kahervā tāla thekā is replaced by mukhra 1. Basically it’s like playing three cycles of kaherva with one cycle of mukhra. The only reason why it was not noted as such is because mukhras are NOT talas. They are NOT cyclic forms.
