Lesson 19: Six Matra Mukhras
This lesson will examine three
mukhras of the tisra jati, i.e. six beat and twelve beat cycles. There are many mukhras of the tisra jati, but we will devote our focus on to a total of four.
MUKHRA 5:

One
may be looking at this and wondering how this a two beat
cycle can possible fit a six beat cycle? The answer will explained in
greater detail in Lesson 21. If you have a six beat cycle like dadra, you can substitute the final two beats of the dadra theka with this mukhra here.
The
second thing one may wonder about is how difficult can this be if it’s just two
beats? The thing is that the timing of the bols is
crucial. Any beat given an inappropriate amount of time can mess up this mukhra very easily.

This is another good mukhra that is common in Bengali style playing for
connecting Bangla ektal
cycles. The critical thing about this one is the transition between tā and dā.

Mukhra 6 is a cycle that is used to combine dadra and khemta talas. In addition, it serves as a transition from madhya lay dadra
to drut dadra.
I emphasized in matra 4 that kat is used. Unlike
the other kat bols we’ve
worked with, this employs using “ra” as the nonresonant bol, as opposed to
the normal “ti” that we used.

This
a tod commonly used in six beat cycles, especially in
the khemta compositions.
SUPPLEMENTAL: FOR YOUR REFERENCE
This
is not required for this course, but here is a more classical mukhra for Bengali ektal.
This is a good mukhra to use in Bangla ektal cycles.
