There are some interesting differences in this cycle, compared to the theka. The first difference is the bāyā usage in vibhāg 1. The bols of the theka had “dhin tā dhin dhin tā,” while the bols of prakar 1 has “dhin tā dhin ti dhā.” The only real difference is that bāyā usage in the last two bols are transposed.
The second difference is that the off beat nature is lost in the second vibhāg. Unlike the theka where no bol hits the start of mātrā 7, this cycle has “ki” on mātrā 7. Some may prefer this cycle over the theka when accompanying to the ease in timing, especially in the slower bhajans.
ACCOMPANIMENT PRACTICE:
Here is an accompanying exercise with the Hare Krsna mahāmantra. The first clip has mridanga playing prakār 1, while the second clip has a slightly different tune with kartal accompaniment, but no mridanga. Use the second recording to help you accompany the kirtan to help you play the rhythmic cycle in time.
