Tavil
The tavil is the preferred
drum to accompany the South Indian double reeded oboe
called the nadasvaram. The tavil
serves the same purpose as the nagara in North Indian
music to accompany shehnai. The tavil
is a two headed drum where the bass head is played with a stick and the treble
head (shown above) has the main artist wearing metal tacks or thimbles playing
refined and controlled strokes.
