Sursrngar
The sursrngar (“the decoration of notes”) is a rare, almost
extinct, instrument, which resembles the sarod and
sitar. It has a resonator shape and fingerboard that resembles the sarod, while it has wooden soundboard (tabli)
and a camel bone flat bridge (jawari) which resembles
a sitar. This instrument uses sarod techniques while
having the sitar-like buzz. Due to its large size and the buzz, it was a favorite
for musicians who wished to play vina compositions
from dhrupada music. However, as dhrupada
music went out of vogue, the sursrngara is has
declined very sharply to the point where barely anyone has heard of it.
