Rudra Vina
The Rudra Vina (the stringed
instrument of Lord Siva), also known as the bin, is one of the most ancient vina instruments. It has two hollow pumpkin gourds on both
ends of the instrument. They are connected by a hollow bamboo rod which
contains the frets and strings. Unlike the sitar and “future” stringed
instruments, these frets are waxed in; the wax must be gently heated in order
to allow fret movement. It contains five playing strings and two drone strings,
known as the chikaris.
Its application is
primarily for dhrupada music and it is accompanied by
pakhawaj. Like the sarangi,
this instrument is known to be able to mimic the human voice very well.
