Mridangam
The mridangam (mrt+anga = clay body) is the most popular drum used in
South Indian music. The drum is somewhat similar to the pakhawaj, however, there are
some fundamental differences. The mridangam’s dayan (shown on the right) has
very little resonance, due to the maidan (middle
skin) is very small compared to the entire drum. Sometimes, one will insert
some straw inside the kinnar (rim skin layer) to
create a snare. The bayan, like the pakhawaj, requires a temporary wheat application to create
the bass sound. The entire body is made of jackwood.
