Mayuri Vina
The Taus or Mayuri Vina (both meaning “peacock”) is a stringed instrument that
is popular in Punjab. It is one of the common instruments used by the Sikh
followers. It is said that it was difficult transporting this instrument
whenever one had to travel great distances, which is why the smaller sized dilruba was invented.
It is a slightly
larger version of the dilruba, with a rather large
wooden resonating chamber, with a peacock head at the bass for artistic
purposes! Some mayuri vina
makers will even add peacock feathers for the artistic touch! Its sound
resembles a slightly lower pitched and richer sounding dilruba.
