Khol
The khol, commonly known
as the mrdanga, is a popular folk drum used in
Northeast India. It contains two multilayered heads made of goat skin and syahi (black circular layer). The head is uniquely smaller
than most Indian drums, which allow it to have a really high pitched sound.
Traditionally, the outer body is made of clay, however
recently, a brass, fiberglass, and a modern version containing hex screws and
plastic heads are just as common. It is considered to be the holiest of drums,
for this is said to be Lord Krsna’s flute during Lord
Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s time
frame. It is the first choice of drums when accompanying bhajans
and kirtans in the Gaudiya Vaisnava movement.
