Harmonium
Originally a British instrument, the harmonium was
nicely incorporated into Indian music. The British harmonium was a reed organ
that would require a chair to utilize the foot pedals pump air. The harmonium
was modified to a small box as it was portable and can easily be maintained.
Although playing was confined to one hand as the other hand was pumping air
into the instrument, this was no problem for Indian musicians, for they did not
use chords. Since then, all facets of music, with the exception of South Indian
music and solo instrumental music, used harmonium in some way or another.
