Ektar
The ektar (“one-string”), also known as a tumbi,
is a drone instrument used in North India. It is a hollow wooden or bamboo
cylinder fastened into a hollow gourd. The gourd has goat skin functioning as a
sound board. A simple chip of wood is used as a bridge. As its name implies, it
only has one string tuned to the tonic of the song played. Some Punjabis found
ways to play simple melodies that are used in Bhangra
music.
