Dotara (North Indian)
The dotara (“two-strings”) is the two-string counterpart of the
ektar in North India. It is a hollow wood or bamboo
cylinder that is fastened into a hollow gourd. The
gourd is covered by a goat skin parchment. There are two strings which are
raised by a simple wooden bridge. The strings are tuned to the tonic and the
fifth or some or other note depending on the raga being performed.
