Krsnastami

One of the most celebrated holidays amongst devotees of the Lord is Sri Krsnastami, better known as Sri Krsna Janmastami. This day celebrates the appearance day of the Supreme Personality of Godhead on earth. Approximately 5,000 years ago, Sri Krsna came on earth to protect His devotees and defeat the atheistic class of men on Earth. In addition, He came to deliver the Bhagavad-Gita right before the onset of Kali Yuga.

 

Devotees celebrate Krsnastami by fasting until midnight, singing bhajans about the Lord, and read pastimes of Lord Krsna in the Tenth Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam. Temples of the Lord will conduct services throughout the day followed by a grand program which begins around 3:00 PM. Lectures by senior devotees, special bhajan performances, dances, drama, as well as bhajans and kirtans take place throughout. The celebration ends at midnight, when the curtain of the newly special-dressed Deities opens up. A maha-arati takes place which lasts up to a half hour. A small meal is served consisting of foods that do not contain any grains or beans.
