Recording/Overdubbing Guitar Rig using Mixcraft 6

Back to the main Sound page

Windows Device Manager
Device manager
Windows device manager showing the three sound cards I have installed
The Soundblaster Audigy card is what I will record from using the Creative ASIO driver
The Mia sound card is being used by Guitar Rig using the MIA ASIO driver
The Realtek is a motherboard sound card that I use to play .mp3's and the windows systems sounds

-
Guitar Rig
The diagram above looks complicated, but I need two ASIO sources and so I need two soundcards
Guitar Rig uses the Mia ASIO driver
Mixcraft is using the Creative Soundblaster ASIO driver to record the output from the Mia soundcard

Note that I do not have to use headphones when recoding which is the way to go as far as I am concerned.
Mixcraft is playing the playback mix as wave output and I hear this through the speakers.
I can play along with the backing track without the annoyance of headphones

-
Sound Card levels
This screen shot shows the level controls for both sound cards I am using
You need to make sure that one sound card is not overdriving the input of the next sound card
You also have to make sure the final output is not overdriving the signal you will be recording
You can see in the screen shot above that I have set the line in levels and line out levels on both cards
If you are getting any sort of nasty distortion, you will have to set up these levels
-
Mixcraft
To set up the input and output in Mixcraft, go into preferences
You can get there by going into the file menu or use the icon up on the toolbar

In the preferences screen, click on Sound device
Choose your driver. Here I have chosen ASIO

Choose the input device you want to record from.
I am using the analog mix Left and Right

Choose your output or playback device
I am playing back the mix as wave

I chose the Creative ASIO driver in the screen shot above
This is what I will be recording from in Mixcraft

Another handy Mixcraft feature: You can access the Windows mixer for that sound card by clicking on the Open Mixer button

-
Mixcraft
This screen shot shows how I have my recording track set up in Mixcraft 6
Press the arm button to arm this track and the ARM button turns red
Use the drop down arrow next to the ARM button to select your recording source
I have selected Analog Mix left and Right and then I selected Stereo
Click the Monitor Incoming Audio so you can hear the output from Guitar Rig
Now when you play your guitar, you should see some activity in the level meters on your recording track

-
Mixcraft Record
When you are ready to record, hit the red record button and start playing your guitar
Hit the record button again to stop recording
What you recorded shows up to the right on the track
Rewind and hit the playback button to listen to what you recorded
You can move this sound clip down or up to another track and then record an overdub on the same armed track
Click on the recorded track so it is highlighted, then use the up or down arrow to move the recorded clip up or down to another track
This way, you do not have to keep arming new tracks and making settings

This method of recording is old school.
It's exactly like if you recorded in a real studio with an amp or in a live situation
What you recorded is what you have to live with
