Carnatica’s
Research team was entrusted with the job of finding out the ratings of a
select few performers this season. Here is the feedback from an opinion
poll of over 100 people, comprising connoisseurs and music lovers, who
attended the concerts of at least 80-90 % of the artistes mentioned here.
This survey was based on the findings as on January 2nd 2002 and is a
slightly modified version to that published in our Season special
Newsletter. The table has been divided into 5 columns as given below:
- Artiste
- Category
of performance - Instrumental / Vocal / Vocal Duets (CP)
- Connoisseur’s
Rating (CR)
- Rasika’s
Rating (RR)
- Artiste’s
own Comparative Performance (ACP) in the last couple of years
The reader may
note that the figures don’t indicate any ranking as in sports or other
fields, but just represent approximately the form, popularity and
consistency of the artistes this season. Different artistes have been
grouped together to form sub-categories such as instrumentalists, vocal
duo-s and so on. Cross comparisons between two sub-categories have neither
been made nor implied. Further,
- The
ratings have been divided into 3 columns – CR, RR and ACP.
- CR
is based on Carnatic purity and classicism, from a connoisseur’s
point of view, based on choice of song/raga and the artiste’s
creativity. The artiste’s overall approach to music and presentation
has also been taken into account. These ratings have been arrived at
from a sampling of at least 3-4 recitals of each artiste.
- RR
indicates their popularity ratings amongst rasikas. It also indicates
the capacity of the artiste to retain the audiences who come for their
concerts, as also the audience reaction.
- ACP
indicates the overall consistency levels of artistes in adhering to
the styles that they have chosen. This is again based on the opinions
of people who have attended their performances consistently for at
least 2 years now.
