MADRAS MUSIC MELA 2001

A QUICK CHAT WITH SANGEETA KALA ACHARYA SULOCHANA PATTABHIRAMAN

Sulochana Pattabhiraman is one of the respected musicians in the Carnatic field today. She is known for her scholarly approach to music and has trained many a disciple. It is indeed fitting that the Music Academy recognise her service to the field by chosing her for the title of Sangeeta Kala Acharya. Carnatica congratulates her on this award and has a quick chat with her.

Guru(s): Sattur Sri. A G Subramaniam, Sri. M A Kalyanakrishna Bhagavatar and Sri. Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer are my respectable gurus. But my talent was brought to the fore by my guru Sri. N Balasubramanaim.

Favorite Vocalist(s): My all-time favorite is M S Subbulakshmi.

Favorite Instrumentalist(s): Lalgudi Jayaraman

Favorite Composer(s): Tyagaraja and Papanasam Sivan, who is known as 'Tamizh Tyagaraja'.  Of course I cannot but mention Syama Sastri and Purandaradasa.

Favorite Raga(s): Todi the king of ragas. In handling this, nobody can hold a candle to the late M L Vasantakumari.

Favorite Venue(s): Music Academy

Favorite Hobbies: I have too many hobbies! I like reading books, watching cricket, mega-serials and tennis, and writing. Above all, I love to teach music.
