MADRAS MUSIC MELA 2001

MEET SANGEETA KALA SIROMANI SUDHA RAGHUNATHAN

Sudha Raghunathan is one of the most popular women vocalists of today. Having learnt from the renowned vocalist, Dr. M L Vasantakumari, and provided vocal support for her in several concerts, Sudha's own career really took off in the late 80s and early 90s. Her climb has been sure and steady, and today, she stands on top.

Her bag of awards and accolades are overflowing, yet year after year, she has more to add! This year it was the turn of Nungambakkam Cultural Academy to honour her with the title of Sangeeta Kala Siromani. Carnatica congratulates her on the award and finds out a few of her favorite things ...

Guru(s): M L Vasantakumari - she was a musician par excellence, in all aspects.  She would present new kritis in her evening concerts, having learnt it just that morning.  Sometimes while we were going to a concert in the car, she would set a Pallavi and present the same in the concert.  There are occasions when she has sung raga, neraval, swara for a main raga with ease for a kriti that came as a listeners choice.  One could really think of her like a role model.

Favorite Vocalist(s) from the past: I have a open mind to listen to all styles of music and like great stalwarts.  If I should mention in  specific, I will say that I like Alathur brothers for their verbal clarity, GNB for his manodharma, Madurai Mani Iyer for his simplicity and charming touches, which could reach even those who did not know music. Srirangam Gopalaratnam  is also in my list.

Favorite Instrumentalist(s) from the past: Karaikurichi Arunachalam (Nagaswaram), Chittibabu, S Balachandar (Vina) for his passionate and scholarly approach and B N Suresh (Flute)

Favorite Vocalist(s) of the present day: Here I would actually like to mention the extremely senior musicians both music-wise and age-wise - M S Subbulakshmi and D K Pattammal. They have been totally dedicated and perfect in the field.

Favorite Instrumentalist(s) of the present day: I like U Srinivas for his mellifluous playing and continuity, especially, on a difficult western instrument like Mandolin.

Favorite Composer(s): It is rather difficult to answer this question.  I like the compositions of all composers. To be specific, I like Tyagaraja, Purandaradasa, Papanasam Sivan and Subramanya Bharati.

Favorite Raga(s): Whatever raga I choose for that particular time or  concert is my favorite raga.  If I have to list my favorite ragas it is endless.

Favorite Venue(s): I'm sorry.  I do not want to answer this question.

Favorite Hobbies: I have the habit of collecting palm size Pillayar-s, writing poetry in English and Tamil, and reading science fiction. Though listening to music cannot be considered as a  hobby, I like to listen to Hindustani gazhals and classical western music.  I listen to M S Subbulakshmi's music to refresh myself.
