Kala Ratna for Mani Krishnaswami

    
The Kala Ratna award of the Sri Rasika Ranjani Sabha was presented to Carnatic vocalist Mani Krishnaswami at the inauguration of the Sabha’s annual music festival 2001-2002 here on 20th December 2001. The title was conferred by C V Narasimhan, former under secretary general, United Nations. Narasimhan lauded Mani Krishnaswami for strict adherence to the classical and purely traditional approach. The award included Rs 25,000 cash, a medallion and a citation.

Inaugurating the festival, Justice M Karpaga Vinayagam of the Madras High Court, said the Sabhas should attract the youth to Carnatic music programmes and also take them to the masses.

Sabha president A R Santhanakrishnan said the auditorium in Mylapore would be renovated with the assistance of sponsors and members. Attempts would also be made to revive the Sastriya Sangeeta School of the Sabha, he added.

Maithreyi Ramadurai and Narayana Vishwanath (Sarigamapadani) felicitated the awardees. The function was compered by Sarada Nambiarooran. A Nagaswaram performance by P K M Ravi and party preceded the inauguration. The function was followed by a Bharatanatyam performance by Mathumathi Selvan.
