MADRAS MUSIC MELA 2001 |
R Rajagopal, the Secretary of Karthik Fine Arts was recently honoured for his 50 years of service to the field of performing arts. Carnatica's Pushkala Ramakrishnan had a brief chat with him to find out about the aims and activities of Karthik Fine Arts. |
We started this Sabha on April 14, 1975.
The Founder-President of the Sabha is T T Vasu. M R Krishnamurti and I are the Secretaries of the Sabha.
I was one of the Founder-Secretaries of the Mylapore Fine Arts Club while M R Krishnamurti was the treasurer of the same. We came out of MFAC and started Karthik Fine Arts. It is only a continuation of service to music and nothing else.
To promote art and culture is our prime objective. We are on the look-out for our own venue to conduct programmes, but so far we have not found any suitable place.
I cannot answer this, as it is a question to be answered by the members of our Sabhas and rasikas in general. Anyway I can tell what we do in our Sabha. We promote music, dance, drama, kathakalakshepam and films, while there are some Sabhas that concentrate only on music and / or dance. We even celebrate Children's day. In other words, we give importance to diverse activities and conduct programmes which feature them.
The awards that we give are Isai Peroli for musicians, Natanamamani for dancers and Tamizh Isai Vendar, again for a musician through the Tamil Isai Vizha that we conduct annually. The first two awards consist of a cash prize of Rs. 15,000, in addition to a Gold medal and a citation. The Tamil Isai Vendar award, carries a silver Tambura along with the cash award of Rs. 15,000. Apart from these, we also give awards for drama artistes from the Kodai Nataka Vizha that we conduct every year. This award carries a purse of about Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000.
For the Isai Peroli, we look for talented young musicians below 35 years of age. The committee members meet, discuss and present their impressions on different artistes. So far we have not had any big controversies as we are able to think along the same lines where talented artistes are concerned.
This year we presented a dance seminar on the contributions of Raja Serfoji II between December 2nd and 4th. This was put together by a committee comprising experts like Dr. Sudharani Raghupati, Manna Srinivasan and R Kausalya, Principal, Govt. Music College, Tiruvayyaru. |
