NISHA RAJAGOPAL - NEAT PRESENTATION |
Nisha Rajagopal's concert for Kapali Fine Arts was
impressive in all aspects, especially her rendition of the kritis and
Bhajans. She possesses a high-pitched, pliable voice, which in due course,
will mellow down. Nisha's presentation indicated a strong repertoire and
a balanced plan. She has a natural flair which will soon make her a
musician to reckon with. Opening the concert with Sarasuda, Saveri Varnam, Nisha rendered a number of choice kritis in her rather short concert. The kritis included Ekadantam (Bilahari, Dikshitar), a rare Swati Tirunal kriti in Saraswatimanohari, Mamava jagadeeswara, Cheraravademira (Reetigowla, Tyagaraja), Padametunai (Valachi, Papanasam Sivan), Meenakshi memudam (Gamakakriya, Dikshitar), Karpooram narumo (Khamas, Nachiar tirumozhi), Dheerasameera (Desh) and a couple of Bhajans. Nisha took up Reetigowla and Gamakakriya for elaboration. There was grace and elegance in the development of the ragas, while at the same time, the krama or grammatical aspects were properly oriented. One doesn't see this quality too often these days. Neraval and kalpanaswaras at the Charanam line, Madurapurinilaye in Meenakshi memudam were neat and precise. The chowka kala swara-s especially were heart-warming. The violinist, Ambika Prasad played the raga alapana-s fairly well, but his support for the neraval and kalpanaswara suites were wanting. Sankaranarayanan's mridangam support was satisfactory, while his Tani Avartanam was impressive. Ratings: Fidelity
to Sruti - 80 % Overall effect: Vocal
- 75 % Concert - 70 % General remarks: The Sastri Hall atmosphere
is something special. - Deelen |
