AWARD FOR S SOWMYA |

| The Needamangalam VVS Foundation will be awarding the title of Sangeeta Kala Bharati on popular vocalist S Sowmya during the music season in December. The title, instituted last year exclusively for young musicians first went to T M Krishna. The Foundation was started in memory of Needamangalam V V Subramanya Iyer on his first remembrance day in 1997 by his senior disciple, B Umashankar along with a few other disciples and rasikas in Madipakkam, Chennai. It has since been organising chamber concerts, and the Jayanthi/Aradhana festivals of great composers apart from regular music competitions, lec-dems etc. The award function this year will be held on 2nd December 2001, during the fourth anniversary celebrations of the Foundation. |

MANI KRISHNASWAMY TO GET KALA
RATNA
Rasika Ranjani Sabha, one of the oldest Sabhas of Chennai will confer the title Kala Ratna on senior vocalist Mani Krishnaswamy this year. It will be conferred on her on December 20, 2001 during the Sabha's December music festival series at the RR Sabha Hall, Mylapore. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs. 25000, a medallion, shawl and a citation. |
